Binary of Maharsi Pingala :Ancient Indian Binary vs Modern Binary

by DR. SHREEHARI V GOKARNAKAR

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz is considered as the father of Binary since more than three centuries. His binary calculations are based on the ‘Table of numbers’ which is a table of ‘0’ and ‘1’. American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) is also based on this ‘Table of numbers’. In today’s world of computers, this character coding format represents text used in computers, telecommunications equipment, and other devices. Interestingly, Leibnitz does not explain the source of this table. No explanation for the movement of numbers in the table from right to left is mentioned. Dr. Shreehari Gokarnakar has revealed the process of the formation of this ‘Table of Numbers’ through Maharṣi Piṅgala’s Chandaḥsūtram written in 200 BCE. He has provided Pingala’s six methods of Binary calculations from the eighth chapter of the treatise including calculating the total number of codes, Various coding patterns, Decimal to Binary, Binary to Decimal, Algebraic expression formula, and space management for coding. This book reveals the secrets of the Ancient Binary System and the journey of Binary from ancient to modern times. The study of this book is indeed beneficial for the students of Binary and computer science. This is one of the many contributions in the field of Indian Knowledge System and can be used as a study material. स जयति पिङ्गलनागः शिवप्रसादाद्विशु द्धमतिः।
